Gresham, Ore. -- The Gresham GreyWolves resumed West Coast League play after a three-day long hiatus with a 7-2 win over the visiting Walla Walla Sweets on Monday evening at Oslund Field in Gresham, Oregon.
The GreyWolves started the scoring early with a run in the first inning off Walla Walla starter Haydn King. Mike Peabody led the inning off with an infield single and after he was moved to third on consecutive productive outs, he scored on a two-out singe by Drew Curtis to give Gresham an early 1-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Gresham starter Robert Reaser was effective versus the Sweets batters, limiting Walla Walla to two runs on four hits in six innings, which was good enough for his first win (1-3) of the season.
The Sweets evened the score in the third inning, but the GreyWolves scored two more in the fifth inning to re-take the lead. Once again, it was Peabody singling to open the inning. Later, de Watteville tripled and Curtis doubled to push Gresham's lead to 3-1. After the Sweets scored a run in the sixth, Gresham was poised to put the game out of reach.
Gresham scored four runs in the sixth on four hits (including Peabody's fourth single of the game) and moved in front by a score of 7-2. The GreyWolves were also helped out by an error by the Sweets, which allowed the fourth run of the inning to score.
Reaser found himself in a bit of trouble after he opened the seventh inning with consecutive walks. Head coach Justin Barchus then turned to reliever Chris Brown who retired the next three he faced to keep the Sweets off the board in the inning. Brown would stay in to pitch the eighth and ninth innings, too, and didn't allow a run on three hits while striking out six and walking one.
Offensively, Gresham tallied 14 hits (five by Peabody, which is a new season-high for a GreyWolf in 2017) to Walla Walla's seven. With the win, Gresham evens up the season series against the Sweets at two. Gresham goes for a season-series lead and series win on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. at Oslund Field. The game will be broadcast on mixlr.com/greywolves with the pregame show starting at 6:20.
