GreyWolves even series in Cowlitz with 6-2 victory

07/15/2017 8:28 PM

Longview, Wash. -- The Gresham GreyWolves defeated the Cowlitz Black Bears 6-2 on Saturday night behind six scoreless innings from Andrew Hansen in Longview, Washington.

Hansen not only kept the Black Bears off the scoreboard in the run column for six innings, but also did not allow a hit through the first five innings. In his last outing, Hansen kept the Port Angeles Lefties hitless through four innings. In the sixth inning against Cowlitz, Hansen allowed three singles but left the bases loaded and put up another zero.

Hansen improved to 4-2 with the victory by allowing no runs on three hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Gresham's offense supported Hansen early with a run in the second inning after Jake Cosgrove singled in Conner Bock with two outs. In the third, the GreyWolves scored three more times. Mike Peabody, Alec de Watteville, and Jackson Thoreson all singled. Gresham was aided by two errors committed by Austin Ingraham in left field on the same play in the inning.

After Thoreson's single (which drove in two runs), it would be a while until Gresham's next base runner. Cowlitz starter Davis Baillie, who suffered his first loss of the season (2-1) combined with reliever CJ Blowers to retire the next 18 GreyWolves. Gresham's next base runner came in the ninth inning, when Drew Curtis singled. Aaron Simpson followed that with a double before R.J. Teijeiro singled them both in to extend Gresham's lead to 6-1.

Chris Brown relieved Hansen in the seventh and pitched the final three innings. He gave up an unearned run in the seventh after he committed an error and allowed a run in the ninth before recording the final out of his first save of the year.

The win improved the GreyWolves' record to 4-6 in the second half and snaps Cowlitz's six-game winning streak. Gresham is now 3.0 games behind Cowlitz but 3.0 games behind the South Division-leading Corvallis Knights.

Gresham goes for the series win tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. from Story Field in Longview. The GreyWolves are looking to win a second-straight series after going over a month without a series win. The game will be broadcast on mixlr.com/GreyWolves.
